As in all books of this type, Junger describes the toxic state of our bodies/environment today and insists on a detox regimen as the cure - no surprise there, so just skim that section if you've already read several of these. After experimenting with various cleanses himself, he developed the "Clean" program to give adherents a jumpstart on detox. He basically cuts out any and all foods that cause sensitivity/inflammation (from dairy to wheat to strawberries...) and advises one solid and two liquid meals per day, with a few additional restrictions. As detox regimens go, I actually think this one is on the moderate side (readers who think this is severe should try fasting for a while!) Some of his advice is helpful whether or not a person is willing to undergo his program, such as eating lighter meals in the evening and allowing your system at least 12 hours of rest to digest and restore before introducing more foods. This would be particularly helpful for people who suspect that they have unidentified food sensitivities/allergies, because he instructs you on how to discover them based on a simple elimination diet.
