I really enjoyed how Brook expands her universe in this book - particularly the Guardians' Gifts. I love how Irena's gift of being able to manipulate metal and Alejandro's Gift of manipulating heat were unusual and reflected who they were as characters. I also really enjoyed (and this is not unique to this book) how damaged the characters are. When they change, they don't become "all better". There's an element of acceptance, which I love, and the change is a hopeful, good change, yet doesn't betray who these characters are. I find it sad and disappointing when an author shows a relationship which only works where a damaged character is totally healed. When an author shows a relationship based on acceptance and the change a character experiences is organic, it's a relationship that I can really root for.
