Why oh why did I read this? I'd never read Zola before, and this seemed the most accessible of his books, but man was it torture. If you're interested in a long, drawn-out character study of two completely unlikeable people considering a murder and then dealing with the psychological repercussions, read this book. If not, steer clear.
