Ho. Lee. Shit. Easily the most impressive work of fiction I've read in years, and one that I'll have to reread, as I'm still - nearly three weeks after finishing - grappling with it.

The narrative structure could easily have been a gimmick, but instead propels the story and further ensnares the reader in the narrative web. The text deals with big issues - the meaning(s) of slavery and freedom, of identity, of extinction and rebirth - while remaining playful and giving the reader plenty of meta winks about the literary highwire act that's being attempted. And all of this is carried over Mitchell's effortless chameleon-esque shifts of style.

In every respect, brilliant. A must read.

Katie You inspired me. I just added it to my list. Someday when I've slaved through the 2000 plus pages of the Game of Thrones series, I will read important fiction again.
