** spoiler alert **
In a genre of post-apocalyptic teen books where characters are killed off at the whim of the author (whether they are popular characters or not; whether it furthers the story or not; not that I'm bitter...) this book is refreshing. There are character deaths, sure, but so far this author seems to love her characters and is letting them grow into fully fleshed out individuals.
Also, just a great unique story. It is not all about "let's torture the characters." There is a wonderfully complex story that you feel brewing that will most likely become more clear as the series/trilogy progresses.
