Set aside any thoughts of the movie starring Dick Van Dyke. The original book by Ian Flemming is 99% different.

In the Flemming story, Mr. Potts and his wife come into a little money after selling a unique candy to a manufacturer. They decide to buy their first car. Potts finds an old, not-working race car, buys her, and the whole family (Dad, Mom, a boy and a girl) fixes her up. Despite the fact that Mr. Potts is an inventor, the car already has lots of features he doesn't understand and he does next to nothing to improve upon her. On their first big family outing, the family flies over the crowded roadways and lands on a secluded beach. When the tide comes in and they nearly drown, the car turns into a boat and takes them across the English Channel. The end up in France, on a tiny beach. The only way to go anywhere but back out to sea is to drive into a large cave. Here, the family finds clues that criminals are using the place as a hide out. After safely driving out of the cave, they blow it up - and discover gangsters are after them. They fly away from the bad guys, but the gangsters later find them and kidnap the children to have them help in a candy store heist. Of course, Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang saves the day, the family is given a huge reward for catching the gangsters, and they all live happily ever after with their magical car.

It's a fun story, and one your kids are sure to find exciting.
