I neither read this book nor saw the movie as a child—I know, I know; this has always seemed to spark horror into the hearts of my friends—so I thought I should perhaps remedy that, even at my now Advanced Age. I enjoyed it for the way it was gentle without being saccharine, and for the sprightliness of its language. I can definitely see how it would, for a child reading it for the first time, point the way to all the surprising and different uses that words can have. I'm possibly a little too old to be coming to it for the first time, but I can see myself buying a copy for my youngest cousin when she gets a little older.
