Interesting premise, uneven execution. As the mother of four sons, I found that Chand has a little trouble writing with a male voice, and the emergence of more than one "special ability" for Alex through the course of the book was just a little too convenient.

However, her portrayal of blindness is believable on some levels. I used to read for blind students and had many blind friends as a university student, so I have some idea of what it's like to be sightless. Everyone I knew experienced it differently, so Alex's challenges ring true for the most part. The story is well-paced. Despite my three-star rating, I care enough about these characters and their stories to look forward to the rest of the series, and would recommend it to my students as well.
