I thought I knew the plot of this - three girls and a teacher disappear during a picnic at Hanging Rock in Victoria, Australia; one is found later with no memory of what happened; enigmatic ending - but in fact that's only half the story. There is a lot of drama that happens to the other characters after this event.

It's one of those terrible, doom-laden stories that you read with the same kind of fascination as watching a train crash, wondering how an author can bear to inflict such fates on his/her characters - like Thomas Hardy in that respect (though not in others). Joan Lindsay wrote this in the 1960s but was born around the time that it's set (1900). I wonder if she was very unhappy at school and this was her way of exacting revenge on the memory of her teachers and fellow pupils?

It took me a few chapters to get into it but after that, I couldn't stop reading.
