A collection of scholarly essays, some quite specialized. I simply skipped those and focused my attention on the essays which were more accessible, giving a revisionist history based upon textual criticism of historic sources, numismatic evidence, and an analysis of the inscriptions on the Dome of the Rock. For those essays, the book was worth the reading and provided much food for thought regarding the origins of Islam. I perhaps could have considered 4 stars for those essays, but a couple of them were so riddled with typos that I cannot bring myself to do it.
