Fascinating, entertaining, and ultimately heartbreaking account of Hemingway's final years by the man who arguably knew him best at the time. Horrifying to think how little was known about mental illness and how few effective treatments for Hemingway's flavour of it existed 50 years ago. At the same time, both Hemingway and the author make the case that when all the things that give you pleasure in life are gone for good, punching out might be the right thing to do.
