John Irving is one of those few authors whose books are always provocative. While some are masterful achievements, others miss that mark completely. His successes are breathtaking and almost majestic and the others are forgettable. Really for someone who has written for so long and had so many memorable books, that is not a bad track record. For me, this book falls into the forgettable category. I love Irving's ability to take the reader on a dazzling journey as he did to Vienna with Garp or to Boston in Twisted River or in so many of his great novels. He creates journeys in this book, but they lack the magic- the writing is just not there. His characters in no way soar as they did in Owen Meany or The Cider House Rules. I'm not sure why, but he has missed the mark before and he really misses it this time.
