What Alice Forgot
by Liane Moriarty
by Liane Moriarty
What if you lost 10 years of your life? And discovered that you don't really like the person you have become, or the choices you have made. Is it possible to start again and undo the mistakes of the past?
When Alice Love wakes after a tumble at the local gym ("The gym? But I hate the gym!") she doesn't understand why nobody believes her that she is pregnant with her first child, or why her beloved husband Nick is so hostile on the phone. Even her sister Elisabeth, whom Alice adores, seems cold and distant.
When Alice discovers that she is in fact 10 years older, has 3 children she doesn't recognise and is in the process of divorcing her husband, she must first set out to discover the person she has become, and try to reclaim her life. What has happened to her in the last 10 years? What has gone wrong between Nick and herself? Why is Elisabeth always so sad? Why won't her neighbour talk to Alice? And who is the mysterious Gina who seems involved in all of this?
I had the audio version of this book, and this wonderful thought provoking tale made me actually enjoy the long commute to and from work - so much that my husband often had to tap on my window when I sat in the driveway still listening to it. Written mostly from Alice's perspective, but with excerpts from Elisabeth's diary and Alice's grandmother Fran’s blog, the reader follows Alice's quest to find out where the carefree fun-loving Alice of 10 years ago has disappeared to, and her efforts to right the mistakes from a past she cannot remember. The book makes for some sad, some profound and some hilarious moments (for example when someone tells Alice to “google it”. “Goggle? What is that?”). I loved the characters in this story and by the end of the book they had become so real to me that I was sad it was finished.
I can fully recommend this book to any woman out there who has ever wondered what circumstances and choices have made her the person she is today. Did I imagine ten years ago that I would be where I am today? What if I could start over again – would I make the same choices? An excellent read, one I will surely revisit again.
