I never enjoyed the author's style that much - did not hate it either but found it way too ponderous like a schoolteacher presenting a lesson in many ways - and his subject matter in Winter's Tale and Soldier of Great war did not interest me enough to put up with it - this one seemed more interesting; same very ponderous style taking a page to talk about things others describe into a paragraph and again the content turned out to be not really that interesting as i went fast through the book and found myself "meh, I've read this story (Love Story with rich girl and poor boy in this case) again and again" - with a style more on my taste I would not mind reading such again btw (see my review of Last Will for example), but not with Mr. Helprin's very long winded one - the book is 700+ pages long but its quite simple story is worth only about 2-300 pages

If you are an author's fan, this book should tick all the boxes, but if you did not care for his earlier books, you most likely won't care for this either
