somehow i had never read this. liked it quite a bit. reminds me of the disaffected 90s. i was thinking the cast of secondary characters was a little too colorful. then i started thinking of some of the customers i had as a soda jerk: the womyn with hair sprayed 2' on her head like a feather headdress, the Wolfman with Tourette's who only came in on full moons, the tiny math kid who would figure out the correct change for you, the bitchy fighting queer couple. yeah. that was the Midwest in the 1990s. loved the coloring of the illustrations. definitely gives a slice of weird life of the time period and the tumultuous friendships of high school.
