Eoin Colfer excels at creating believable characters that work their way off the page and into your imagination. The characterization in this book is its strongest feature although it also has a good plot and pacing. The only detraction is the distance between the reader and the characters created by the narrative technique. I believe Colfer is using 3rd person omniscient as his point of view and even more than that he seems to drawback, telling the story as a historian would rather than planting us in the thick of things beside the characters. At times that was distracting and off-putting, but the characters and story managed to overcome that and it was still an enjoyable read.
