The Witness

by Nora Roberts
At 1st, I did not think I would enjoy the book very much, but once again, Nora Roberts sucked me right in. After all these years of writing books, Nora still has fresh, interesting stories, unlike a few authors I could name. Abigail is hiding from the Russian mafia after witnessing a hit 12 years before. She had been protected by the FBI while waiting to testify, buy crooked agents tried to kill her. Before he died, one of her protectors told her to run, hide and not to trust the cops because she would not know who had been paid off by the mob. That advice has kept her alive and safe for 12 years.
Then she meets Brooks, the chief of police of the small town in the Ozarks where she has re-located. Can she trust him? He is suspicious when he notices she is carrying a concealed weapon, and goes to her home. And there, he comes across cameras,an elaborate security system and a guard dog. A bit of overkill, in his opinion. And it leads him to believe that she was hurt badly in the past.
Naturally, the cautious, love-starved Abigail and the open, loving Brooks will fall in love. But can they work together to bring down the Russian gangsters? Will they survive? I think it is worth reading this book to see. And Abigail's stilted, awkward manner will amuse...
