The themes of this book were intriguing, and the mystery of the Twinkle device was entertaining to figure out. However, I have a hard time enjoying books when I hate the characters, and unfortunately I hated them here. I thought Tom was an idiot, and Meredith was despicable. I know Crichton tends to heavily favor plot over character (which is why I also disliked his book Timeline), and so I did give this book three stars for its strong plot. I kind of want to say that the themes on gender were slightly unsettling? But I don't want to be one of those extremist feminists who says "Who cares about men's problems," so...I don't know. I suppose it's worth thinking about either way.
