That was unfortunately pointless, and proof that good prose does not make a good story. It's obvious what he's trying to do, but unlike in Atonement you just don't care about these characters. Ironically I was reminded of the composer in Amsterdam who thinks he's created his magnum opus, which the critics later dismiss as a poor rip-off of Beethoven.
