The first 5 or 6 books in this series had a lot of energy but not much control -- sort of like wizard Harry Dresden, come to think of it -- but nowadays you can see the author working on a bigger plan that extends across multiple volumes and features many storylines.

There are tradeoffs to the increasing scope of the project. Harry started out as an appealingly low-key supernatural private-eye type -- not quite a loser, but definitely a small-timer -- but now he's regularly saving the world without even taking time out for a snack. He's less Sam Spade with spells, and more Die Hard with a magic wand.
