I was kind of surprised by how much I loved this book. I'm usually not very interested in non-fiction (although the author herself calls it a novel, it is based on true stories of her grandmother) or biographies, but Lily Casey Smith was one of the spunkiest, strongest, funniest, most unforgettable characters I've ever read. Walls' writing style is very gripping and perfectly fitting to tell Lily's story. I think my reading of this book was really enhanced by my location, too--I started and finished the book during a weekend trip to Southern Utah, so I was surrounded by the same sort of terrain that Lily lived on for most of her life . . . looking out the window at dry, dusty desert views and red, rocky hills felt like what Lily herself must have known in Arizona and New Mexico. I loved reading about Lily's life, and I loved her gumption and and spirit and tenacity. What a woman!
