The movie was better. Why? Because it was funnier, and it touched upon the social issues of the Russian occupation more than the book did. I think there ought to be a novel adaptation of the movie, and this book could be used as a sort of footnote. But it did yield a beautiful, quoatable idea, which (to paraphrase) breaks down to "Love is the desire for shared sleep".
