Well, that wasn't as bad as I was expecting after reading the reviews. It's clear that it was in need of a revision that Fleming didn't get chance to give it, but overall I thought the general story and the writing was certainly up there with anything up to Goldfinger.

Where I thought it could definitely have been improved was the opening. The plot to brainwash Bond and kill M was flown through super fast and his recuperation glossed over very quickly indeed. What could have been a very tense start to the book wasn't really much of that at all.

So, a solid 3 stars from me - much better than the likes of Dr No and Goldfinger, but not as good as the books leading up to it - probably about on a par with You Only Live Twice.

One more to go, and I think I'll probably be glad to give Bond a rest after Octopussy.
