I found a lot to like in this debut novel, an Irish dystopian love story rooted in good old fashioned story-telling. Great scenes between a gang leader and his aging mother, who holds the real power; an upstart girl who threatens both their power, with her growing army of fashionista followers; occasional brief interludes in which clothing is described in a freeze-frame fashion reality show kind of way. Ultimately so many of the stories in this novel, front and back, are about love -- reciprocated, triangulated, and otherwise -- and nostalgia. The voice, which is terrific, slowed me down almost in the way that PK Dick does -- in a way that precludes skimming, that seems to force you physically to enter the story.
