** spoiler alert ** I was personally surprised by Micro, but in a good way. I enjoyed the concept quite a bit. The idea of shrinking people using a supercharged electromagnetic field is I think very interesting. The whole plot is that nine graduate students fly to Hawaii to look into a new company called Nanigen. This company has an expertise in the micro world, and it doing “ground-breaking research” in the forested areas of Hawaii. Suddenly, one of the company’s founders, who happens to be one of the grad student’s brother, disappears. The students find evidence to implicate the CEO, and then the CEO shrinks them all to cover up the evidence. These students are thrown into an unknown realm of danger and wonder. There is a whole world directly under our feet that most of us do not even think about. These students go through many trial, even some die on the journey to become normal sized again. In the end, the final two who survive are returned to normal and the company left in ruins.
This novel I believe was extremely informative. I had never heard of some of the microscopic processes and organisms that live in this “micro world.” I just assumed none of that was real, but looking into it I found that much of what Crichton and Preston put into this novel was actually happening all around us all of the time. It brings to life a question. How can we do so much damage to the earth with things like pollution, deforestation, land development, and urban usage without knowing the whole story of the microscopic world that is beneath us? It makes me wonder how my action affect my environment and others around me. This book was an eye-opening page-turner that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of Crichton or Preston that enjoys this form of sci-fi. It was a joy to read and I’m glad I did.
