A colleague who had lent me Anathem recommended I read this much earlier novel, and I am very glad I did. I spent much of my time checking the date of publication, and thinking "wow" this came out in 1992 - when many of us had never even heard of the internet, let alone the term hacker. Some of the descriptions of ancient Sumerian religion may be a little long, but they are interesting nonetheless. And when the main character, Hiro, needs information, who does he consult? The Librarian!
