Russell Banks might just not be my kind of writer. I was disappointed in this novel, which has received rave reviews since it was released thirty ? years ago. The protagonist, Bob, is an unlikeable character. Though he wants to do right, and frequently suffers from easy-to-relate-to crises of identity - in the end he is totally self-absorbed, and chronically cheats on his wife for no real reason. Then the book is broken up by chapters about the Haitians, but these chapters are not straightforward tellings, they are all spirituality and mysticism, making it hard to follow the narrative.
The book kept me reading, and certainly had some compelling sections ... its low rating, though, partly reflects the overly-high aspirations I had for it.
