I almost gave up on this book about 30 pages into it - my mind kept wandering.

The story is interesting but there are so many random things happening that don't seem to fit into one cohesive story. I really didn't get the storyline involving Charlotte and her jailhouse lover. Why, Charlotte? Why do you like this guy? Are you that damaged? Do I really care why you are that damaged? Unfortunately, not really.

It seemed like the author was trying to create a Hannibal Lector type character for the swamp man in prison, but it just didn't work for me. When we find out what happens to them in the end it isn't satisfying, it's sort of odd and expected.

The writing is wonderful and for most of the read, I was hooked but the ending let me down.
