I love big, epic books that cover entire lives or multiple generations. Trigiani's Big Stone Gap books are some of my favorites, but they don't compare to this book in scope or ambition. The 470 pages flew by; I couldn't wait to see what would happen next, even to the minor characters. I couldn't help thinking occasionally of how much the immigrant experience was "cleaned up," but it's such a beautifully written story that I got over it quickly.
