Having already read books 1 and 3, I knew that I would like this, book 2 of the series, and I did. Matthew Shardlake is a compelling character. Because he is a hunchback, you can feel sympathetic with his plight, but he has a lot of determination. A young girl is in prison, accused of killing her younger cousin, a despicable character, as it turns out. Shardlake's benefactor is coming to the end of his influence, and there is the introduction of Dark Fire, or Greek fire as it was originally named. There is a lot of suspense, as we go back to a much more elemental time.
