The supernatural, ethereal quality of the story is in sharp contrast to the blunt (cheeky) twelve-year-old, Mary. It's a relatively short story, told with shifting time frames and points of view, not to mention planes of existence. It's easy to think of this as a sweet story, but it has the potential for raising interesting questions about life, death, family, and love in discussion groups.
