Tough going ... chilling and complex. Can't say I enjoyed it as much as I'd hoped, nor was it a page-turner which is the way I like my thrillers. I'm full of admiration for Ackroyd's full-blooded evocation of London in the late 17th -early 18th century. By comparison - and paradoxically - the contemporary city and characters he creates are somewhat pallid and distant. Give it a go.
