I wanted to love this book. It's Jose Saramago, after all. He could do no wrong. Plus, it's almost the last book of his I have to read. But it took me forever to get through it. Perhaps I just didn't connect with Ricardo Reis. Although I understand his lack of direction, his feeling lost in life, I just couldn't get his lack of self-reflection. Perhaps more visits with his ghostly friend would have made the book more interesting. It's not much of a last year of life. That's sad, but not poignant enough to make it a really good book. Saramago's writing of the thought process is as brilliant as ever. I always feel like I'm reading my thoughts a half second after I think them, and that's cool, but overall, this was disappointing.
