The best indication of the power of this book is the way its grip on me firmed up over time. I started it assuming I'd read a bit for the atmosphere but that I wouldn't be interested enough to finish it. After a few chapters I couldn't wait to turn the page and see what came next. So many bizarre and Byzantine turns! Certain historical events were more complex than I had realized, and the personal memories by many, many participants fleshed out the history.
