Maus I: A Survivor's Tale: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman
Historians — real-life academic historians — did not know what the toilets looked like at Auschwitz until Spiegelman tagged along with a documentary film crew to settle this question — so he could draw the toilets for a sequence in Maus. They even criticized him for depicting them inaccurately, until his documentary evidence forced a retraction.
