** spoiler alert ** The father, Jack Bowditch, who is a poacher and the son, Mike Bowditch, who is a game warden, but that is not what keeps them apart. What keeps them apart is a history of abuse and neglect and the son's final breaking point where he felt he'd given up on his father for good.

When the Jack is accused of murdering a police officer and the man he is protecting and is on the lam, Mike, who has never believed much good about his father before, believes more than anything that his father is innocent.

What Mike learns is as he tries to find his father and clear his name is that what he wanted to see in his father was what he sees in himself--the potential for doing good. And what he was beginning to see in himself was his father--the potential for causing harm.

While, ultimately, Mike loses his father in every way possible, what he regains is the positive trajectory of his life and the people in it, including his new father figure, Charley.

It's a fast-paced, intriguing thriller with a lot of heart. I enjoyed it very much.
