The beginning and ending are strong but the rest is a bit meandering. There are some interesting parallels between Tolkien's Hobbit in the way of journey and obstacles but if you take the story at face value, the middle seems to lack substance. That being said, I am a huge fan of Quilp and even though he is a bit of a twerp, oh lets be honest he's an ass, I loved Quilp's final scene. No spoilers – but it's a great scene! As often within the works of Dickens, there are many memorable characters and moments throughout this narrative that will stay with you long after you put the book down. I would have given this four stars but there was too many unnecessary scenes. And most likely this is due to the fact that Dickens published this as a serial and thus it is understandable.
