A great mystery set in 1845 New York. Manhattan already had 400,000 people but no police force. The narrator becomes one of the first copper stars in spite of himself and stumbles into a murder investigation. The author paints a very vivid picture of New York politics and religion (which were sometimes the same thing), including the conflict between American "nativists" and the masses of Irish immigrants escaping the potato famine.
