Tara's review
Sadness by Donald Barthelme
Beautifully fragmented, that-state-you-were-in-when-you-wrote-that, wise, honest, mindful stories. This is my first Barthelme and I can't wait to get my hands on more. Why hadn't I heard of this guy until last week? He grew up in Houston and the scenery in his stories have this mysterious Houston feel. The atmosphere. The taste. Like an itch all over your entire body coming from some unknown place - the discomfort drives you on an endless journey to find the source of it - but the source you cannot find! So instead you keep driving, driving, driving. Who wants to stop driving anyways?
