The first line has to be one of the least recognised best opening lines to a novel:

Hale knew, before he been in Brighton three hours, that they meant to murder him.

The writing and the story is wonderful, classic Graham Greene and a must-read. However, on a personal note I have to say I preferred The End of The Affair, which seemed to have a lot more soul in it and I cared about the characters a lot more.
