I read this while lying on a beach in Mazatlan -- not quite the shores of the Sea of Cortez, but close enough for me. Reading it while on the actual Sea of C would be even better.
I've only read one other Steinbeck (Grapes of Wrath) and it didn't really inspire me to read more. But this is one that my favorite college professor told me about, so I gave it a try. And I'm glad I did.
Steinbeck's writing is so easy-going and conversational in this one. This is probably due to the fact that it's a journal of their trip, rather than a novel. Topics range from the life forms they collected to thoughts on the native residents they encountered, and so much more.
This is a fairly short, easy read. If you are going to Baja or anywhere along the Sea of Cortez, make sure this is in your backpack!
