This Book is by Scott O'Dell. He does a very great job at painting pictures and scenes from the book in you head. This book is about a girl named Karana, who is a native that lives on an island. A war breaks out suddenly between the Natives and White men. Many of the Natives die, including Karana's father. Karana and her Brother end up being the only ones to survive on the island. As they are struggling to survive, her brother, Ramo, is killed by a pack of wolves. Karana has to live on her own, doing all the male work and duties. She becomes well farmiliar with her surrounding and taking care of herself. She one day finds a girl on the island, named Tutok. They become good friends and help each other to survive. Then one day Tutok leaves the island on a boat. Karana is very lonely and sad on the island by herself. She finds a pup that is the son of the leader of the wolves that killed her brother. She comes to love it. She names it after the pups father, which is Rontu-Aru. Later in the book a ship comes to the island, but then leaves. Two years later it returns and Karana runs to meet it in her finest dress. Does she leave with it, or decide to stay on her home land?
I would recommend this book for people who like a mixture of sadness and happiness. It is all about adventure and nature. It shows how if you have enough love for something, things can turn out right and with a little hard work.
