Historical fiction for tweens that will introduce them to an exciting real person - Beryl Markham. Told in third person but from Beryl's point of view, the book covers her youth in Africa, living with her father near the Nandi tribe. She befriends and receives training from a Nandi warrior, even going on a lion hunt. The endnote describes how all of these remarkable incidents occurred, based on Markham's autobiography and interviews. The final third of the book describes her year in Nairobi at boarding school. In between each chapter is a letter or telegram describing her solo flight from Europe to Canada as a young woman. An exciting story with a strong female character.
