My appreciation for this novel is entirely a matter of my geek-dom. Both the implied critique and partial validation of post-structuralist literary criticism is well done, and the sheer breadth of knowledge Byatt had to acquire to write this very interesting tale is enormous. The novel doesn't entirely satisfy as a story, but there is a lot here to relish.
