Gut-wrenchingly honest, with very real characters making very realistic mistakes. Although the story was painful to read at times, it drew me through it; I read the last hundred pages after dinner with the baby crawling around my legs and trying to pull the book out of my hands. Kate's friend Elizabeth dies, and her will specifies that Kate is to receive her journals--years' worth of them--in order to read and decide what to do with them. Naturally this causes conflict with Elizabeth's husband, who rightly feels they should belong to him. However, there are unpleasant secrets in the journals; it turns out that no one really knew Elizabeth...or did they? This is, in the end, a tribute to how a marriage should and should not be run. The best of fiction illuminates real life, and this is one of those cases, showing the danger of withholding difficult situations and feelings from one's spouse--the damage it can cause, and the unnecessary pain. A book well worth reading.
