Overall this book was enjoyable, but I think I was hoping for something more unique. It was enjoyably well written and the characters were a definite highlight. They were all interesting individuals with their own strengths and weaknesses, etc. Exactly what you want in great characters. Unfortunately I felt that the (immediate) setting was just a little bit too familiar fantasy territory. On its own that wouldn't be a problem, but unfortunately just not enough happened in plot terms for me either. It felt more like a prequel to the series, rather than the first entry. Very little actually had changed by the end of the book. With little plot happening and not enough of the world being explored the main focus was on character development - which was very well done. However, it just didn't feel enough to me. Unfortunately, despite the great characters the other segments just felt a little too mediocre. Not bad, by any means, just missing out too much. I probably would have preferred it if there was more interaction between the characters and less time spent getting character x from point A to point B. I shall probably read the second book, however, as there were hints about the setting becoming more interesting and with the pace of the plot picking up, so it was good enough to leave me interested in more!
