Loved. I still have to pull my thoughts together, but in the whole, The Devil in Silver was fantastic. LaValle combined do many elements in this novel. I was deeply moved and cracking up within pages of each. Though this was an uncorrected proof, I recommend TDiS to readers of all stripes. I appreciated all the levels on which the novel attempts to hang out and engage.
I strongly urge interested readers to read the novella, "Lucretia and the Kroons," as an intro or a prequel to this book. I dig the world that LaValle creates here, and I appreciate the care he takes to render it fully--even down to the pet peeves I have in the way folks of color are monochrome (black) versus all the details that white characters can receive. Everyone had dimensions and inner lives, even a rat... He hit them all cleanly. Love all around.
