Shelby Jane is an eleven year old from a broken home. She has spent the time since her mother’s sudden departure living with her father and his widowed mother. When dad’s job takes him over seas for six months and Shelby’s grandmother is in the hospital for a surgical procedure that
requires a lengthy recovery time, the decision is made to send Shelby to live with her estranged mother at her home in the Louisiana bayou.

Shelby harbors some strongly negative feelings towards the mother who left her and is, therefore, not happy about being sent to live with her. Added to her discomfort with her mother Shelby encounters some less than friendly school mates whose custom it is to tease and torment the new kids in town. Shelby finally finds a new friend, Gwen, who lives alone in the bayou. There are mysteries surrounding Gwen, one of which is whether Gwen is responsible for some of the notes Shelby finds hidden in the blue bottles hanging in a tree behind Shelby’s mom’s house.

This is a well crafted ghost story with an emphasis on love and forgiveness. Thoroughly enjoyed this YA offering.
