Gwen the Librarian's review
Alvin Ho Allergic to Girls, School, and Other Scary Things by Lenore Look
As I was reading this super-fantastic book, I was thinking to myself that this is how kidlit used to be. Fun parents. Humorous and touching moments. Bullies. Superheroes. All good stuff.
Alvin Ho doesn't talk when he gets scared and school is one place where he's always scared. He also doesn't talk at piano lessons, the psychotherapist, or even if he's stuck in a tree. This presents all kinds of problems that Alvin has to solve for himself. Like, how do you make friends at school if you don't talk? Or, how do you get down from the tree if you can't shout for help?
Just wonderful. Black and white illustrations by Pham pair pefectly with the text.
