Anne of Green Gables (Anne of Green Gables no.1) by Lucy Maud Montgomery
I never wanted to read this when I was a kid, but I thought now that I was all grown-up I wouldn't mind all the pollyanna stuff. And I didn't...for the first 2-3 chapters.
Is it just me, or is there something really irritating about Anne getting the big scholarship, and then being forced to give it up? I hate the thought that this was how it ends because a "nice" book about a girl can't end with her going away to college and getting an independent life - you wouldn't see any male hero staying at home because his mother is going blind--, but at the same time I really liked the idea that if someone is smart and hard-working enough to beat everyone out for a scholarship, that they can still "succeed" without going to the big city and taking the conventional route. The idea that there isn't just one single opportunity or turning point in a person's life and if you blow that, your one and only chance, it's over and you may as well pick up your Kwik-e Mart uniform on ...more
